Charges certified against man accused of shooting two Chesterfield officers and killing K-9
A judge certified charges against a man accused of shooting two Chesterfield officers and killing police K-9 Knight during a May domestic dispute.
A Chesterfield County District Court judge certified all charges against a man accused of shooting two police officers and killing a police K-9 during a standoff last spring, WTVR CBS 6 reported. The incident occurred on May 31 at a home on Gum Fork Place during a domestic dispute.
According to NBC12, police responded to the home after reports of a domestic disturbance. Officers Jacob Clark and Jacob Wells were injured in the shooting, and the police canine named Knight was killed. Several witnesses, including police officers and the K-9 handler, testified during the preliminary hearing.
Body-worn camera footage shown in court captured the moments when the man allegedly opened fire on officers inside the home. The footage also showed officers attempting to negotiate with the suspect before the shooting began. A drone video displayed the aftermath, showing injured Officer Clark and the suspect inside the home as a SWAT team entered.
The hearing included testimony from a police sergeant who was the first to arrive and interacted with the suspect, as well as an officer who witnessed Officer Wells being shot in the arm. The K-9 handler testified that Knight was sent in to distract the suspect but was shot shortly after reaching the top of the stairs.
The case continues as the court moves forward with the certified charges against the accused. Prosecutors and defense attorneys are preparing for the next steps in the legal process.
