Man arrested in 2025 shooting death of Miami activist Dwight Wells
Miami police arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of community activist Dwight Wells over a year after the incident.
Miami police announced the arrest of a man in connection with the October 2025 shooting death of Dwight C. Wells, a well-known community activist and founder of the anti-violence group "Wheels Up, Guns Down," according to CBS News Miami.
The suspect, Jamar Lionel Jenkins, was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals following an investigation that involved examining call records, searches of his car and home, and iCloud data, Miami Police Chief Edwin Lopez said.
The arrest report indicates a family connection to the case, noting that Wells was convicted for the murder of Anthony Jenkins in 2004, and that several relatives remained upset over that conviction.
Surveillance footage from the day of the shooting shows Wells being shot outside his Liberty City restaurant, with witnesses fleeing the scene before Wells collapsed. Police had previously described the shooter’s attire as dark-colored clothing and a face mask.
Chief Lopez emphasized the significance of the case due to Wells' work with law enforcement to reduce violence in the community, stating the impact of the tragedy extends beyond the family to the wider Miami community.
