Art teacher leads recovery classes for stroke patients
A Miami Gardens art teacher finds healing through teaching art to rehab patients.
A Miami Gardens art teacher is using his passion for painting to aid in his recovery from a stroke. After experiencing a medical emergency, he initially thought he would have to stop teaching art. However, with support from his therapists, he discovered a way to continue sharing his love for art while recovering.
Craig Blackwood, who taught art and woodwork for nearly three decades, suffered a stroke late last year. Following the incident, he began physical and speech therapy at the Memorial Healthcare System's Rehab Institute, where he faced significant challenges in communication.
Recognizing his dedication to art, his therapists sought a way to keep him motivated during his recovery. They proposed that he lead art classes for fellow patients, allowing him to combine his therapeutic needs with his passion for teaching.
Every month, Blackwood conducts an art class at the Rehab Institute, where patients create their interpretations of his paintings. This approach not only facilitates artistic expression but also aids in speech therapy as he explains the painting process. The use of paintbrushes and sponges is designed to enhance patients' hand grip and coordination.
Blackwood expressed gratitude for the opportunity to teach again, highlighting the importance of this experience in his recovery journey.
