San Diego officials oppose AI data center plan at NAVWAR site
Plans to replace housing with a large AI data center at the NAVWAR campus face local opposition.
San Diego officials and Congressman Scott Peters have raised concerns about a proposal to replace planned housing at the historic NAVWAR site with a large artificial intelligence data center, FOX 5 San Diego reported.
The Navy is redeveloping its 70-acre campus in the Midway District, and the selected development team has acknowledged considering a data center as part of the project, KPBS reported.
The proposed data center would be a massive 400-megawatt facility, which has prompted opposition from local lawmakers who had supported housing development at the site.
The NAVWAR campus redevelopment plans are currently under review, with local officials urging the Navy and developers to reconsider the shift from housing to a data center.
The outcome of the redevelopment plans remains to be seen as community feedback continues to influence the project direction.
