Tropical Storm Simon weakens with 40 mph winds in eastern Pacific
Simon moves northwest near 9 mph, expected to become remnant low soon, bringing rain and surf to Baja California Sur.
The National Hurricane Center reported that Tropical Storm Simon is currently weakening while moving northwest in the eastern Pacific Ocean. As of early Friday morning, Simon had maximum sustained winds near 40 mph (35 knots) and was located about 210 miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
Simon is moving northwest at about 9 mph and is expected to maintain this general direction through the weekend. The storm's central pressure was measured at 1002 mb. It is forecast to continue weakening and become a post-tropical remnant low within the next day or so, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend up to 25 miles from the center of Simon. The storm is expected to produce rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with isolated maximum amounts of 3 inches over parts of Baja California Sur through early Saturday. Swells generated by Simon could also affect the coast of west-central Mexico and Baja California Sur in the coming days.
Currently, there are no coastal watches or warnings in effect, but interests in Baja California Sur are advised to monitor the storm. Further details and updates can be found on the National Hurricane Center's website.
