A recent WRAL/WSOC Poll shows that nearly two-thirds of adults in North Carolina have not placed a sports bet since the state legalized online sports betting in March 2024. The poll found 63% of adults reported never betting on sports, a figure consistent with previous surveys in 2024 and summer 2026.

According to WRAL, 5% of adults have bet once, 13% have bet between two and four times, and 14% have bet five or more times since legalization. Despite the majority not participating, the state has seen significant sports wagering activity.

Statewide, bettors have placed $15.7 billion in paid wagers through legal online sportsbooks from the launch through the end of August 2026. This amount excludes an additional $780 million in promotional or free bets, WRAL reported.

Monthly wagering has remained strong, with at least $500 million in paid bets placed each month over the past year. November 2025 saw a record $791 million wagered, indicating a core group of frequent bettors.

The poll and wagering data highlight a contrast between the majority of adults who have not engaged in sports betting and the substantial volume of bets placed by a smaller segment of the population.
