President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday that puts on hold a new sanctions package targeting the Russian economy, according to news4jax.com. The sanctions had been recently passed by Congress and signed into law by Trump last month.

The legislation, named after the late South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, aimed to quickly restrict financial resources supporting Russia's war against Ukraine, news4jax.com reported. The pause came just two days before the sanctions were set to take effect.

Trump's decision to delay the sanctions drew sharp criticism from congressional Democrats, as noted by news4jax.com. The president stated the waiver was in the national interest, according to winchesterstar.com and other sources.
