Four killed in Oregon elementary school shooting, suspect was 16-year-old former student

A 16-year-old former student attacked a special education classroom at Silver Rail Elementary, killing three children and a teacher.

Police in Bend, Oregon, are investigating a deadly shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School where four people died, including three young children and a teacher, PBS NewsHour reported.

Authorities identified the shooter as a 16-year-old who previously attended the school and was a special needs student. He attacked a special education classroom before being killed at the scene, according to PBS NewsHour.

The gun used in the attack was reportedly purchased by the suspect's mother around the time of his birthday in August, NBC News said.

CBS News noted that a teacher tried to stop the shooter after he entered the school.

In the aftermath, families gathered to mourn and the state's governor offered words of consolation, emphasizing community support during the difficult time, PBS NewsHour reported.
