Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has revised its terms of service for business accounts, granting itself broad rights to scrape content from business websites to develop its artificial intelligence products, according to multiple news reports including the East Bay Times.

This change, effective October 30, applies to all entities with free Meta business accounts, which are commonly used by businesses, brands, and celebrities. The new terms allow Meta to use automated software to extract any content from these websites without a contract or compensation.

Legal and media experts warn this could impact a wide range of industries, including news organizations, film studios, and recording artists. Danielle Coffey, president of the News/Media Alliance, highlighted the potential for copyrighted material to be taken without permission.

Matthew Sag, a law professor cited by the Bay Area News Group, noted that even large publishers are significantly affected by Meta's unilateral changes, given the company's dominant position in the market.

Meta has described the update as a consolidation of existing policies, but some observers remain concerned about the implications for intellectual property rights and the lack of negotiation options for businesses.

Local businesses and content creators in San Jose and the surrounding Bay Area are among those potentially affected by these new terms, which could influence how their online content is used in AI development by Meta.
