Multiple institutions complete inventories under Native American Graves Protection Act
Yale, Indiana University, Michigan State, and others report cultural affiliations in inventories of Native American remains and objects.
Several institutions have recently completed inventories of human remains and funerary objects in accordance with the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA), according to notices published in the Federal Register.
The Yale Peabody Museum in New Haven, Connecticut, has completed an inventory and determined cultural affiliations between human remains and Indian Tribes, as reported by the Federal Register.
Similarly, Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, Michigan State University in East Lansing, the Niles History Center in Niles, and the Grand Rapids Public Museum in Grand Rapids have also completed inventories of associated funerary objects or human remains, with cultural affiliations identified to Indian Tribes or Native Hawaiian organizations, according to the Federal Register.
These notices indicate ongoing efforts by multiple institutions to comply with NAGPRA requirements by identifying cultural affiliations and preparing for potential repatriation of remains and objects.
The Federal Register notes that these documents are part of a prototype Web 2.0 version of the daily Federal Register and advises verification against official editions for legal research.
These inventories are important steps in the process of repatriation and cultural preservation under federal law.
