Friends, family, and members of Baltimore’s LGBTQ+ community came together in the Charles Village neighborhood to honor 27-year-old transgender woman Sophie Lee, who was found shot on September 11 on North Calvert Street, The Baltimore Banner reported.

At least 50 people participated in the march, sharing memories of Lee as a caring person who opened her home to those in need and was deeply loved by many, according to Lee’s mother and community members.

Baltimore City Police are searching for a man wanted in connection with Lee’s killing. Authorities have not confirmed if the death was a hate crime, but Maryland Safe Haven noted that over 50 transgender people have been killed in Maryland since 2018.

Marchers emphasized the need for justice and recognition of transgender people as integral members of the community, highlighting Lee’s involvement in Baltimore’s ballroom scene, a space for artistic expression and community building.
