As Maryland Governor Wes Moore campaigns for a second term, some residents are questioning his record, particularly regarding the state budget and local impact. Joshua Taylor, a Baltimore-area social media personality known as 'ShowLove the Poet,' criticized Moore’s claim of turning a budget deficit into a surplus, comparing it to the illusions of Harry Houdini. Taylor told Spotlight on Maryland that despite Moore’s claims of tax relief and falling crime rates, many feel left behind.

Taylor has built a growing social media presence by openly criticizing Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott, expressing concern that Black leaders in the state have neglected young men of color. He said his goal is to 'show love' to those who may not fully understand the political landscape.

Governor Moore’s campaign highlights that he transformed a budget deficit into a surplus, a key point on his campaign website. However, under former Governor Larry Hogan, Maryland ended fiscal year 2022 with a $5.5 billion general fund balance, according to state comptroller publications, which some residents reference in their critiques.

The debate reflects a broader divide among Maryland voters as Election Day approaches, with differing views on the effectiveness of Moore’s policies and their tangible benefits to communities like Baltimore.

What we’re watching: How these contrasting perspectives on Governor Moore’s record influence voter decisions in the upcoming election.
