The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) has approved a new approach to handling fare evasion on its transit services, according to FOX 5 San Diego.

Starting in 2029, fare evasion will no longer be addressed through the criminal court system. Instead, MTS will implement an administrative penalty program that imposes capped fines.

This new program also includes payment flexibility to make it easier for riders to settle fines without facing criminal charges.

The change aims to streamline enforcement and reduce the burden on the court system while maintaining fare compliance on San Diego transit services.
