Trump campaigns mostly in red states despite promise to hit swing districts

President Trump's midterm travel focuses on red states he won easily, reflecting challenges for Republicans in competitive races.

President Trump pledged to campaign in about 35 competitive races during a White House dinner in early September, aiming to support Republican candidates ahead of the midterm elections, according to waer.org.

However, since that pledge, Trump has campaigned with fewer than a third of those candidates and has largely focused his travel on red states where he won decisively two years ago, as reported by multiple outlets including waer.org and kwit.org.

Trump described his visits to these red states as gestures of gratitude and to support strong Republican candidates, while also addressing concerns about lower Republican turnout in years when he is not on the ballot, waer.org noted.

His recent campaign stops have included states like Arizona, Montana, Ohio, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Alaska, with some trips involving long flights, such as the eight-hour journey to Alaska to support close races there, waer.org detailed.

This travel pattern highlights a shifting electoral landscape where even traditionally red states require active campaigning to secure Republican victories, reflecting challenges for the party in the upcoming midterms, according to waer.org.

The White House has not clarified the specific 35 places Trump originally referenced, and the president's focus on red states rather than swing districts suggests a strategic adjustment in response to the current political environment, as observed by waer.org.
