Attorneys for Representative Ilhan Omar have requested the Justice Department to promptly return property taken during a federal search of her home, according to reports from the Associated Press and other outlets.

The search is part of an immigration fraud investigation, which Omar's legal team describes as unjustified and politically motivated, targeting her as a longstanding critic of former President Donald Trump. They argue there is no legitimate basis to suggest Omar violated citizenship laws.

Omar's lawyers called the investigation "vindictive" and said it infringes on her constitutional rights and the separation of powers. The search took place just weeks before the midterm elections, in which Omar is a candidate.

The Justice Department responded by stating that the letter from Omar's attorneys contains false allegations and inaccuracies, affirming that all court orders and legal obligations were followed during the search.

This dispute highlights ongoing tensions between Omar's legal defense and federal authorities regarding the legitimacy and conduct of the investigation.

What we're watching: How the Justice Department will respond to the demand for the return of seized property and whether this case will affect the upcoming elections.
