President Donald Trump signed an executive order to pause a new sanctions package aimed at the Russian economy, according to WRAL and the Associated Press. The sanctions, known as the Lindsey Graham Act, had been passed by Congress and signed into law by Trump just last month.

The legislation was designed to more quickly restrict financial resources fueling Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine. It targeted Russian officials, banks, and a shadow fleet of tankers that maintain Russian energy exports, the AP reported.

Trump's decision to delay the sanctions came just two days before a deadline for their implementation. He informed Congress that the pause was in the national interest but did not provide further details, WRAL noted.

The move drew criticism from some lawmakers. Sen. Richard Blumenthal, a co-author of the bill, said Trump was disregarding the will of the American people and allies. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed disappointment, urging supporters to advocate for the sanctions' revival, as reported by WTOP.

Russian attacks continue amid the tensions, with recent strikes killing at least four people and Ukrainian drones disrupting flights in Moscow, according to WTOP. The pause in sanctions raises concerns about Ukraine’s security as winter approaches.
