Charleston coroner requests SLED review of child deaths in Ladson home

Charleston County Coroner Bobbi Jo O’Neal, along with community members, attorneys, and the family of two young girls, has requested an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) into the handling of the deaths of 2-year-old Emory Deacon and 1-year-old Harlow Deacon. The children were found dead on September 29, 2026, at a home on Pinewood Drive in Ladson, according to The Post and Courier.

The coroner's request, made on October 9, 2026, asks SLED to review how local police, state child welfare personnel, and mental health crisis units responded to the situation in the weeks and month prior to the children's deaths. The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office confirmed SLED is assisting in its investigation but said it will not request an external review of its actions, as reported by The Post and Courier.

The girls’ father, Zach Deacon, spoke publicly for the first time on October 16, 2026, demanding answers and accountability from the Charleston County Sheriff’s Office. He and his attorney have criticized the sheriff’s office and the South Carolina Department of Social Services for inadequate welfare checks and response, according to ABC News 4 WCIV.

The coroner stated the children died from starvation and dehydration caused by neglect. Justine May, the mother of the children, has been charged with two counts of homicide by child abuse. The coroner is conducting a mandated Child Death Review for the case.

Family members and attorneys have expressed concerns about the investigation's handling and have created a makeshift memorial at the Ladson home. The case continues to draw attention from local officials and the community as they await further investigation results.
